COMPASS
Reggae rock & hip-hop
Born in the hazy, sun-drenched alleys of Ocean Beach, San Diego, Compass is a coastal paradox of enigmatic frontman and producer Paul X. Frustrated by the rigid boundaries of the local surf-rock scene, Paul spent his early twenties locked in a garage with nothing but a beat-up Fender Stratocaster, a vintage MPC sampler, and a massive crate of golden-era hip-hop and dub reggae vinyl. He envisioned a sound that captured the true duality of Southern California: the laid-back, ocean-breezy days and the gritty, high-energy pulse of the city nights.
The result is a genre-defying sonic cocktail that hits like a shockwave. Compass anchors their sound in the heavy, hypnotic basslines and steady rhythms of traditional roots reggae, but tears the groove apart with distorted, punk-infused rock riffs and Paul X’s rapid-fire, introspective rap verses. Unlike the typical beach-town acoustic acts, the band brings a raw, boom-bap hip-hop energy to the stage, featuring a live DJ scratching over blistering guitar solos and a brass section that swings with heavy West Coast swagger.
Their legendary DIY backyard shows quickly became the stuff of San Diego myth, drawing a fiercely loyal, wildly diverse crowd that blurred the lines between skaters, hip-hop heads, and reggae purists. Following the explosive viral success of their independent mixtape, Concrete Tide, Compass graduated from sweaty basement jams to selling out iconic local venues like the Belly Up. Guided by Paul X’s relentless creative vision, the band isn't just riding the wave of the modern SoCal sound—they are completely engineering a new one, proving that the beach has plenty of edge if you know exactly where to dig.
