The story behind SOLA

Old songs.
New life.

Hi everyone! In this video I explain a little about my background, the history behind the music on this channel, and why I decided to create SOLA Virtual Group.

Many of these songs began as recordings I made more than 20 years ago, and SOLA is my way of giving that catalog a new life using modern production technology.

Questions answered

About the songs, technology, and artists

If some content is AI-assisted, how can the songs be copyrighted?

The underlying songs featured on this channel were written and recorded by me years before today’s generative AI tools existed. I own the original compositions, including the lyrics and melodies. The newer recordings are reimagined versions of those pre-existing works using modern production tools, including AI-assisted technology. The use of those tools does not change my ownership of the original human-authored compositions.

Did AI write the songs?

No. The songs themselves were written by me. Many began as demos I recorded more than 20 years ago using traditional instruments and recording equipment. AI-assisted tools are used as part of the modern production and presentation process.

Are the artists on SOLA real people?

SOLA’s recording artists are virtual artist projects created to represent different styles of music from my catalog. The songs, however, come from real compositions and recordings that existed long before the virtual artists were created.

Are the vocals AI-generated?

Some of the modern recordings use AI-assisted or synthetic vocal technology. That technology is used as a production tool to perform songs that were already written, arranged, and developed beforehand.

Why use virtual artists instead of releasing everything under your own name?

My catalog covers very different genres, from rock and metal to pop, country, punk, and jazz-influenced music. Creating separate virtual artists gives each group of songs its own identity, sound, and visual world.

Are the old recordings in the video authentic?

Yes. The older demos and live recordings shown in the video are recordings from the original era in which these songs were written and performed.

Why revisit songs that are more than 20 years old?

Many of these songs were never given a proper release. Modern technology finally gave me a way to revisit the recordings, improve the production, and share a catalog that otherwise might have remained sitting on old CD-Rs and hard drives.
